While you are on a car ride with your family, suddenly there are red and blue lights flashing behind you. You turn around to look at what kind of emergency vehicle is approaching behind.
Could it be an ambulance? Firetruck? Or a police car? Whatever it is, it is a citizen’s responsibility to make way for any emergency vehicle so that it can reach its destination as fast as the speed of light.
The emergency lights used in emergency vehicles and other industries serve an important purpose. Firstly, they visually tell people of the extremity of an emergency vehicle coming through. For example, if an emergency vehicle is heading to the emergency site, the emergency lights will alert the drivers to make way for the emergency vehicle so that the emergency vehicle can go to its destination as soon as possible.
Another example of the usage of the emergency light is where if an emergency vehicle is near the accident site or at a dangerous location, this will alert the drivers around the area so that they can be extra careful while driving around the area.
Next will be if someone has committed a traffic offence, the traffic police will turn on its emergency light indicating you to stop so that both parties can discuss a possible traffic violation.
So what is the use of blue and red lights in emergency vehicles? Although the use of colours in an emergency vehicle may be different from state to state, here are the possible reasons for the usage of red and blue lights. But based on the information that we have gathered, the colour red may be associated with stop and warning. It is said that red emergency lights can get buried in heavy traffic as most tail lights in vehicles are red. So in this circumstance, blue lights stand out to alert other drivers.
The other point is that red light is more visible during the day, and blue light is more visible at night. Hence, the usage of both blue and red lights will help to alert the drivers on the road no matter what time of the day it is. Lastly, some studies suggest that the usage of red and blue lights take the edge of problems of drivers who are colourblind. For example, people who have difficulty seeing the colour red will not have a problem seeing blue. Then, drivers who can’t see blue will not have a problem seeing red (example). So, that could be the reason why both blue and red lights are used to alert the drivers on the road, even if the drivers are colourblind.
